$1000 annual research grant awarded to a University of California, San Diego School of Medicine (UCSD SOM) student engaged in stroke research.
Basis for selection: The scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis, to a student conducting stroke research for their Independent Study Project (ISP). If there are multiple applications in a given year, the most clearly planned out research plan will be awarded the grant.

Dr. Welch was a dedicated scientist, driven to progress science through research, from which he amassed a library of publications. He was also an educator at Southwestern Medical School prior to working in the Biotechnology industry.
An avid surfer and outdoor enthusiast, Dr. Welch was in excellent health throughout his life; however, he suffered a carotid dissection and subsequent devastating stroke.
This grant is in honor of Dr. Welch, and embodies his lifelong contribution to scientific research, with aim to help our understanding and treatment of cerebrovascular accident.
